The owners of Holy Cow Creamery in Wyandotte are holding a fundraiser Saturday to give back to help their community after being robbed last month.

After finding out the thief broke into the store to steal money for drugs, the owners felt sympathetic.

"We felt really bad because they told us the reason why he did it was for drugs, for drug money. When his family approached us that's when it hit me. That I felt like... I can't imagine being in that position," said owner Debbie Rote-Hayes.

The man made off with more than $1,000 cash but turned himself in after getting pressure from relatives.

That's when Holy Cow Creamery owners came up with the idea to give 15 percent of the proceeds from today's sale to the downriver chapter of Families Against Narcotics.

"The drug problem is everywhere, and it's affecting everybody," Rote-Hayes said.

She also owns Elizabeth Perk Coffee & Ice Cream in Trenton. Both shops are participating in the fundraiser.

These shops will also give 15 percent of today's sales to the organization:

  • Trenton Ice Cream Shoppe
  • Custard Corner
  • Elliot's Bakery
  • A Serendipity Cakery

If you can't make it to one of the participating shops, visit Holy Cow's Facebook page to donate.
