EAST LANSING, Mich. (WXYZ) — Michigan State University said one student-athlete tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday and a second athlete didn't report to campus after testing positive at home last week.

According to the university, 124 student-athletes were tested on Monday as part of the return-to-campus protocols for athletes.

Student-athletes that tested negative will undergo a second round of testing on June 22. They have to test negative the second time before being able to participate in voluntary workouts.

No athletic department staff members tested positive.

Earlier this month, the university announced protocols for student-athletes coming back to school for voluntary workouts.

Football, men's and women's basketball and volleyball will be the first to return and undergo coronavirus testing.

Anyone entering buildings will go through a single-door and undergo health screenings and temperature checks. Student-athletes will also be required to wear face masks at all times except during workouts. They will also get their own water bottles to use and bring to each workout. Locker rooms will remain closed.

MSU Athletics provided the following statement:

"Michigan State conducted testing for COVID-19 on 124 student-athletes on Monday, June 15. One student-athlete tested positive and will be isolated for a period of 10-14 days. Housing will be arranged based on prior living arrangements and need for isolation if living with others. During this time, daily check-ins with athletic training staff will be conducted, with additional services provided as directed by the medical and administrative staffs. Further testing and physician follow-up will be required prior to returning to any level of workouts.

Student-athletes who tested negative will undergo a second round of testing on June 22. A second negative test result is required before being cleared to take part in voluntary workouts.

No athletic department staff members tested positive during Monday’s testing.

Additionally, one student-athlete did not report to campus after testing positive at home last week. The student-athlete is currently recuperating, with the support of family, while at home and will return to campus once fully recovered."
