Burke wins Big Ten player of week, to Indiana coach Tom Crean's dismay

(WXYZ) - Michigan guard Trey Burke won his third Big Ten Player of the Week honor Monday, but it's the reaction to his award that's drawing more attention.

Indiana head coach Tom Crean came across sarcastically confused with reporters on the Big Ten's conference call this afternoon.

"I have a question for you," he asked Dan Mihalik, Big Ten assistant director of communications.

"Can you give me the criteria, so I can understand this once and for all, what the criteria is for the player of the week, what are you guys judging that on?"

Crean was obviously pointing to his first place roster, and the fact that Burke's Wolverines lost to Michigan State in blowout fashion last week, and beat the conference's worst team by nine points Sunday.

Apparently, when Mihalik said he'd give Crean the information, the coach asked a follow-up question.

"Just give me this...where does winning fit into it?"

The Hoosiers are 23-3 with a 10-2 conference record that is tied with Michigan State atop the Big Ten heading into the teams' showdown Tuesday night.

Crean, who is active on Twitter, followed his remarks with a message later in the afternoon:
"From the BT teleconference, let me be clear. I was not questioning a player. I was questioning the criteria for choosing an award."
