DETROIT — Gabby Elliott has three state championship rings, so you can understand why the timing of her Miss Basketball award ceremony felt bittersweet.

Last year, she watched teammate Rickea Jackson win Miss Basketball.

Elliott was hoping to cap her senior season with a fourth straight ring. So as she accepted the award Friday at her school, making it back-to-back for Detroit Edison after Jackson won it last year, she said it was a happy distraction.

"It's a great honor, but it's my senior year and I do want to finish out the season. So to know that it possibly won't happen, or it won't, it's crazy. It's kind of heartbreaking. Something like this, it's getting my mind of it," she said.

Edison is 22-0, and was on its way to the team's latest playoff game when word came down all MHSAA activities were halted.

"It's crazy. We were geared up," Edison head coach Monique Brown said. "It's a very sad day for us."

Elliott is headed to Clemson, and said she found inspiration from her brother Greg, who plays at Marquette University.

"My brother had a chance to win, and he didn't. So for me to win it, I feel like I just won it for the both of us."

"He was happy. It's something else I've done that he couldn't do. Whenever we talk, he says 'I'm better than you, but I don't have three championships like you do,'" Elliott said.
