On Thursday morning, University of Detroit Mercy hosted a basketball camp unlike any other sports camp they put on over the summer.

After an alumni board member pointed out there weren't any camps in the community designed for kids with special needs, Bernie Fuhs and some other like-minded people made it happen.

Now Detroit Mercy -- along with Detroit Athletic Club and the Titan Club -- put on this camp every year for kids and young adults with a variety of needs, ages 12-25.

"I think this is our seventh year, and every year it's gotten bigger. It's gotten better," says Fuhs.

He says this is an opportunity for kids to play that might otherwise not have a chance. "All walks of life, all ages, but they're all together, playing on the same team, working together like any other basketball team."

19-year-old Maddie Walsh has attended the camp for the past three years, and is already looking forward to next summer. "I'm hopefully coming back next summer."
