The Detroit Lions are excited and ready to open the NFL regular season in Indianapolis against the Colts.

"We got weapons. We've got guys we can throw the ball to, we've got a quarterback that's been around and played. There are a lot of things," says head coach Jim Caldwell. "You can talk about it all you want, but we also have to play the game. You know, let's see. Let's see how well we play. Let's see how good we are."

Caldwell was asked at Wednesday's practice about the familiar adage 'Same Old Lions'. He said "I'm not latching on to that particular statement because I think this team is a different team."

Running back Ameer Abdullah -- who is beginning his second regular season in Detroit -- says he's just excited to show everyone what they've been working on.

"This is the most watched game in the country. So a lot of anticipation built up. A lot of people have been waiting for this moment on this team to go out and show how hard we've been working and what the 2016 Lions can bring," says Abdullah.

Sunday will mark the start of Jim Bob Cooter's first full regular season with the Lions, and quarterback Matthew Stafford says the playbook is completely different.

"I think there are some concepts that are similar, but our verbiage, the way we go about it, the way we want to attack defenses, is quite a bit different," says Stafford. "Trying to install an offense halfway through the season last year was a difficult task."

The Lions kick off against Andrew Luck and the Colts at 4:25 EST Sunday.
