Lions hire Joe Lombardi, Vince's grandson, as offensive coordinator

(WXYZ) - The Detroit Lions are hiring Saints quarterbacks coach Joe Lombardi as their offensive coordinator. Grandson of Vince Lombardi, Joe has spent the last seven seasons with New Orleans.

Lombardi has worked as the Saints quarterbacks coach for the past five seasons. He was an offensive assistant for his first two years in New Orleans.

The hire fills the last big void on the Lions coaching staff. On Monday night, general manager Martin Mayhew and head coach Jim Caldwell told reporters they had made progress in the search for an offensive coordinator, but didn't want to rush the process.

Interestingly, Lombardi has experience on the defensive side of coaching, much like Caldwell. Lombardi was a defensive assistant for the Atlanta Falcons in 2006.

He has been an offensive coordinator before, although on a much smaller scale, serving as play-caller and quarterbacks coach for Mercyhurst College from 2002-05. In 2001, he worked in the XFL, coaching tight ends and running backs for the New York/New Jersey Hitmen.

Lombardi played football and lacrosse for Air Force Academy.
