Doug Houda is coming back to the organization that helped him begin his NHL career.

The Red Wings have hired Houda as a new assistant coach, putting him on Jeff Blashill's staff.

Houda has spent the last 10 years on with the Bruins coaching staff. He agreed to a three-year contract.

Detroit drafted Houda in the second round of the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. He played parts of six seasons with the Red Wings from 1985-91, and then again in the 1998-99 season.

He'll likely run the team's penalty kill and defensive units, a role occupied by Tony Granato before he left to become the head coach at Wisconsin last month.
