Former Detroit Red Wings player and coach Bill Gadsy has died, the team announced on Thursday. He was 88.

A veteran of the NHL, Gadsby played 1,248 games in his career with the Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers and Red Wings.

He spent the final five years of his career, from 1961-1966 with the team, and served as a head coach from 1968-1970.

Gadsby was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1970, and totaled 568 points and 1,539 penalty minutes in his 20-year career.

"The Red Wings organization would like to offer its deepest sympathies to the Gadsby family during this difficult time," the team said in a statement.
