Indy 500 winner Alexander Rossi is still running on empty.

The California native has spent the last week answering questions about the fairytale ending to his win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Without prompting, Rossi happily shared a new tidbit. Wednesday night was his first night sleeping since before the race.

The Indy 500 champ described the whirlwind experience, that began when he ran out of gas crossing the finish line at the sport's most famous race.

"We legitimately ran out as we crossed the finish line, which is mind-blowing when you think about it," he said at the Chevrolet Belle Isle Detroit Grand Prix media day.

"We pulled it off, man. That alone is something that I'll never forget."

There is a letter 'R' that will run next to Rossi's name the rest of the season. It signifies his rookie status in IndyCar, but his well-documented experience in race cars was apparent on Sunday.

When Rossi won the Indy 500, he spent a few moments holding his head in his hands, before leaping up to grab milk and began his victory parade.

"I was pretty stunned, and I didn't know what to do. I was just blown away with the whole experience and the easiest way to describe it is, I was just in shock."

There's even more to the moment than just shock, especially for a driver running the Indy 500 for the first time.

Rossi had a good sense of humor about his raw emotions.

"I wasn't impressed with myself for crying in front of a million people. Whatever! That happens."

As for what's next, Rossi promises he is only thinking about performing well in Detroit. He joked about IndyCar scheduling three races in two weeks immediately after the Indy 500, working as a perfect distraction for his victory lap.

If there's one aspect to the new celebrity life he'll experience that bothers him, it's actually something that predated his big win -- but only by a few hours.

"I'll tell you one thing. Lady Gaga was around on Sunday, and everyone got to meet her except me! And I'm just like, 'Come on. Hi, I won so can I meet you now?'"
