University of Michigan men's basketball guard Spike Albrecht, best known for his performance in the 2013 NCAA Men's National Championship game, announced the end of his career due to a hip injury.
According to the university, the senior said he will concentrate on his recovery and rehab after having bilateral hip surgery in the summer.
"This has been the toughest decision I have ever had to make," Albrecht said in a university release. "I am so thankful for what Coach Beilein, the assistants and the medical staff have done for me during my career and in particular over the last year while I was dealing with this injury."
Albrecht played in 115 games for the Wolverines and was a two-time captain. His 17-point performance against Louisville in the 2013 NCAA Men's National Championship Game is arguably his most memorable performance.
"His important role in our 2013 NCAA Tournament run and his incredible performance in the national title game were straight out of a storybook," head coach John Beilein said in a release.
He was named the team's co-MVP last season after starting in 18 of 31 games and averaging a career-best 7.5 points per game.
Former teammates Nik Stauskas and Glenn Robinson III were among many people to wish Albrecht well after the announcement.
