(WXYZ) — Taro Hirose led the NCAA with 50 points in 36 games this season.

The Michigan State forward is leaving East Lansing a year early to sign an entry-level contract with the Red Wings.

Hirose participated in Detroit's development camp last year. He's expected to join the team as soon as possible to get acclimated to the NHL and compete for a job next year, Max Bultman of The Athletic writes.

On Tuesday, he was named one of three finalists for the Big Ten player of the year.

Hirose is 5'10" and weighs 160 lbs.
