Notre Dame QB Golson no longer with team

(WXYZ) - Fighting Irish quarterback Everett Golson is no longer enrolled at Notre Dame.

University spokesmen Dennis Brown confirmed Saturday night that Golson, who had three years of eligibility left after not seeing the field his freshmen year, was no longer enrolled at Notre Dame as of Friday.

"Everett is not enrolled at the university. Federal law and our own polices preclude us from discussing specifics," spokesman Dennis Brown said in an email quoted by ESPN.

According to ESPN's Joe Schad, a knowledgeable source confirmed to him the departure was due to serious academic violations.

As a redshirt freshman last season, the 20-year-old Golson started 11 games for the Fighting Irish, completed 187-of-318 passes for 2405 yards with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions to lead the team to the Discover BCS National Championship where it lost to Alabama 42-14 to conclude a 12-1 season.

With Golson gone and former Fighting Irish quarterback Gunner Kiel transferring to Cincinnati last month, that leaves major questions at the quarterback position for Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly to try and solve.

Kelly's choices at quarterback have dwindled to fourth-year junior Andrew Hendrix, spring enrollee Malik Zaire and senior Tommy Rees, whose 18 career starts makes him the most experienced quarterback left on the roster.
