When Oakland University takes on the winner of Wright State vs. Detroit on Monday, the team will do so with a heavy heart.

Chip Hooper, who is the father of Oakland guard Max Hooper, died Saturday, according to the university. It was also announced by Head Coach Greg Kampe on Twitter.

"This is a very sad day for the Oakland Basketball family," Kampe said in a release.

According to the university, Max is traveling to California to spend a day with his family.

The death comes just a week after Chip, who had been battling cancer, traveled to Rochester to see Max play in his final home game.

After the games, ESPN cameras caught the emotional moment as Max hugged Chip who was watching from the concourse.
