DETROIT (WXYZ) — Tuesday was the first day of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, and players are already applauding the course at the historic Detroit Golf Club course.

2018 Masters Champion Patrick Reed said the golf course is in "perfect shape" when speaking to 7 Action News' Brad Galli on Tuesday.

The par-72 course will play at 7,334 yards during the tournament, which is long, but as a Donald Ross course, the greens will play a factor in it.

"it's one of those golf courses, just by looking at the yardage, looking at the number, you think you'll have to go out and shoot a really low number to have a decent week," Reed said. "But the greens are very undulating, very slopy, and just off the greens, very thick and nasty rough. It'll put a premium on not only hitting the ball well, but putting the ball in the right spot."

Two-time Masters Champion Bubba Watson also talked about the greens, and how they can get tougher if they firm up.

"These greens are so tricky," he said. "That's what every body is focusing on right now is trying to get these greens. If they start getting firm, this golf course can play really hard."

Reed said you can tell the amount of work that the Detroit Golf Club and Rocket Mortgage Classic officials put into the course to get it ready for tournament condition.

"It's immaculate, it's in perfect shape," Reed said. "It's absolutely amazing and it's one of the things where we can't wait for the week to start."
