PLYMOUTH, Mich. — Port Huron native Jacob Truscott is like a lot of NHL Draft prospects. He's waiting.

Truscott played the last two years for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in Plymouth. Leading to his time at the prestigious program, he had a pretty unique mentor. Truscott played at Little Caesars for longtime Red Wings center and four-time Stanley Cup champion Kris Draper.

"He was my coach for six years. I've always looked up to him," Truscott told WXYZ in a conversation before the pandemic ended his season.

"He's a very humble guy. To be able to learn from someone that good and that dedicated to hockey, it really helped my career. It really helped me become the player and person I am today."

After playing for Draper, Truscott earned a spot at the NTDP. The defenseman is ranked in the top 100 of skater rankings ahead of the 2020 NHL Draft.

He'll soon follow Draper's lead, and will hear his name called. The next step of his hockey journey is already determined. Truscott committed to play for Michigan in college.

"Once they made the offer, it was a no-brainer," he said.
