The concept comes as interest in women's sports continues to grow, arriving just in time for the first national broadcast of the Professional Women's Hockey League in the U.S.

"Weve always wondered what if we could go to a bar and not have to fight to have the game on the television," Alissa Graff said.

Graff is turning that idea into a reality by bringing Detroits first bar dedicated to womens sports.

"Its a common misconception that Bar IX is only for women. It is a bar for everyone. It is a bar that is celebrating and highlighting womens sports specifically and that is an entertainment space for everyone," Graff said.

She named the venture Bar IX, inspired by Title IX, the landmark 1972 law that expanded opportunities for women in education and sports.

"We want to make sure that, that history is acknowledged and we bring it into the modern day in a lot of different ways," Graff said.

The venture is personal for Graff and was shaped by her mothers influence.

"She was a beneficiary of Title IX, it was implemented just a few years before she was in college and she had the opportunity to play college basketball on a scholarship, which she didnt even know could have been a possibility when she was in high school to start, and because she played college basketball, she encouraged me," Graff said.

Even without a permanent location, Bar IX is already seeing success and drawing big crowds at pop-ups across the city.

"Weve had anywhere up to 120 people at some of our events," Graff said.

The momentum aligns with growing interest in women's sports.

"Just had the Olympics and this really exciting womens hockey moment," fan Sam Poeppelman said.

The group's next big event is an outing for the PWHL takeover tour, marking the leagues first national broadcast. More than 175 seats are reserved for Bar IX followers to watch together.

Poeppelman said she will be there.

"To have the PWHL back in Detroit is just amazing," Poeppelman said.

John O'Neill will also be in attendance for his first PWHL game.

"Just pure excitement for the PWHL. I just was made aware of it recently and then Im pretty involved in local hockey, volunteer coaching. We get to work with girls and boys and its just been really exciting to see just the community grow and grow," O'Neill said.

I asked O'Neill how to get more men on board with supporting women's sports.
Related Story: PWHL's first-ever nationally televised game to air from Detroit PWHLs first-ever nationally televised game to air from Detroit
"I think, thats a great question, how we can get men more involved with womens sports, I think its a matter of just watching. So its a matter of just taking a look at the game, be it basketball, be it ice hockey, and just seeing the level of play out there, the level of physicality, the passion," O'Neill said.

With more pop-ups planned and crowdfunding on the horizon, Graff hopes this is just the beginning for Bar IX.

"People are excited to watch womens sports in community together, in a supportive environment and a place to just have a good time celebrating womens sports," Graff said.

To stay up to date on Bar IX, you can follow their Instagram.

The PWHL game will air Saturday at 1 p.m. on ION. Its awesome to see, but I think it also speaks to the demand and how this has been a long time coming.

With the proper support, resources, investment and platform, anything is possible.

The world attendance record for womens hockey was set nearly a year ago when 21,105 people were in the stands for a PWHL game between Montreal and Toronto in the Canadiens arena.

During the first period of the Frost-Sirens game in Detroit, the PWHL announced more than 1 million fans have attended games since the league made its debut last season. Players from both teams gave fans in the stands pucks that commemorated the milestone.

Sometimes, I dont believe its real, PWHL executive vice president Amy Scheer said. When we started last year, we didnt really know what to expect. To be here 16, 17 months later and to break the U.S record (for a pro women's hockey game), to see the Canadian arenas sell out, its surreal.

The hockey, every game is unbelievable. I think on the business side, were putting on a great show for the fans. The fans appreciate it and its really humbling.

Scheer has been careful to not provide any hint regarding which of the 20-plus markets the league expressed interest in as leading the pack. She maintained that market size, potential support and opportunities to reach partnerships with local businesses are being weighed equally.

Geography also isn't considered an issue for a league with three teams each in the U.S. (New York, Boston and Minnesota) and Canada (Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto), and concentrated in the northeast with the exception of Minnesota.

It may be advantageous for the league to add two U.S. teams to help attract a U.S. TV rights deal beyond the regional deals it has now, including a YouTube streaming agreement.

The leagues six teams are centrally run, and that will remain the case for the foreseeable future. Several private parties have approached the PWHL about owning teams outright, but have been turned down.

St. Louis is hosting the ninth and final stop of the Takeover Tour on March 29 when the Ottawa Charge face the Boston Fleet.

The regular season ends May 3 and the puck drops on the PWHL's second postseason the following week.

Expansion was placed on the table last fall, with the league careful to announce it was considering expanding by as many as two teams, and Scheer continuing to say it may be limited to one or none.

"Weve done our homework and research and hopefully well find out what that answer is over the next several weeks, she said. In a perfect world, Id love to know something in the next couple of weeks. When the board decides, theyll let us know.

I think now, its a matter of how do we get there.

Several issues still need to be resolved, headed by determining whether to build a new facility to house both the mens and womens teams under one roof and how to pay for a project with a projected cost of at least $300 million.

Ilitch, however, expressed confidence in saying she is eager to jumpstart the womens programs launch by identifying an off-campus arena to host the team in the interim.

All I can say is those that are the supporters and the board and the president all want the same thing, said Ilitch, the daughter of Detroit Red Wings owner Marian Ilitch.

So I think well move as quickly as we can, she added. I dont want to put a date on it though but, boy, Im hoping within the next few months were able to have at least a direction on whether itll be Yost or new arena.

The 102-year-old Yost Arena has been the long-time home of the Wolverines mens program, but considered too small to accommodate two varsity teams.

A feasibility study commissioned by the school last year outlined several options, with the cheapest projected to cost about $50 million to expand Yosts footprint. The cons of such a venture are reducing campus and community ice-time availability and valuable parking spaces.

Otherwise, the studys author, Collegiate Sports Associates, estimated it would cost $300 million to build a new one-rink facility with an 8,000-10,000 seating capacity. CSA also priced out a new two-rink facility at $330 million with the second ice sheet providing more revenue-generating potential.

The study placed a conservative estimate in anticipating it would cost Michigan $4.1 million annually to fund a womens program, while noting there are various partnership options including arena naming rights to offset the losses.

Ilitch has been a long-time proponent for Michigan adding a womens program in a bid to fill a major void in the state. Despite producing numerous national team-caliber players, Michigan has lacked a Division 1 team since Detroits Wayne State disbanded its in 2011.

Her comments come at a time womens hockey registration has jumped by nearly 43% nationally over the past decade, a jump in Division III teams, and the sport gaining further traction with last years launch of the six-team PWHL.

On Sunday, Detroit will host its second PWHL neutral site game in two years, with the defending champion Minnesota Frost playing the New York Sirens at the Red Wings home. And Detroit is also a candidate for expansion, with the PWHL considering adding as many as two teams for next season.

Detroit calls itself Hockeytown, so its kind of bizarre to me that there isnt a college team, said New York forward Elle Hartje, who is from Detroit, and played collegiately at Yale. Im appreciative that the PWHL recognizes it as a viable market to expand to. And hopefully, if that does happen itll have a trickle-down effect into the NCAA.

Sirens teammate Abby Roque is from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and said she would have considered staying in state had there been a program, while also cherishing her career at Wisconsin.

Having something there for young girls in Michigan now would be incredible, because when you can see it, it really does feel so much more attainable, Roque said.

The CSA study found 45 Michiganders played on women's college rosters during the 2023-24 season. Overall, Michigan ranked fourth that year in the U.S. with 5,327 female hockey registrants behind Minnesota (15,723), Massachusetts (11,763) and New York (6,795).

The Wolverines currently feature a womens club hockey team, which was coached by Jenna Trubiano, who has taken over a strategic advisory role in working with Ilitch to launch a DI program.

Too often, Trubiano said, Michigan-born players leave the state to pursue hockey and never return, leading to a talent drain at the youth girls hockey coaching levels.

Trubiano said what helped spur the women's hockey push at Michigan was arch-rival Ohio State winning two of the past three NCAA titles.

It was really something that put it on the radar for people at Michigan because it was like, OK, Ohio State just won a national championship and how did we do? Well, we dont have a program, she said.

So I was actually rooting for Ohio State. Hey, thats the business right, Trubiano added with a laugh. I see them as a competitor, and Michigan faithful, I believe they want to beat Ohio State in everything.

This past weekend, they made a stop at Little Caesars Arena and they put on quite the show for hockey fans in Detroit. PWHL Ottawa lost to PWHL Boston in a shootout thriller. Detroit doesnt have a professional womens team of their own just yet, but the support is certainly there despite challenges that the growth of the sport might face.

Its my whole life, its my whole life too, said members of the U-10 Metro Junior Jets girls hockey team.

13,376 fans filled Little Caesars Arena for an attendance that broke the US record for largest crowd for a professional womens hockey game.

I think its something these young girls deserve, said Megan Keller, Michigan native and PWHL Boston player. Its something to look up to. Its called Hockeytown for a reason.

Despite Hockeytown and the substantial presence of competitive junior and travel hockey throughout the state, high school hockey is not a sanctioned sport for girls in Michigan. In the 2022-23 season, there are only 41 schools playing girls hockey combining or cooperating to make up only 19 teams. Geoff Kimmerly is the director of communications for the MHSAA. He said the sport has been on their radar for a while, but the numbers of participation are just not there right now.

School based girls hockey is an option and its a great option, said Kimmerly. Its a matter of getting those numbers up to where other sports have been when we have begun to consider sponsorship on our part or a state wide tournament on our part.

Elizabeth Bruso and Kylie Drys play for the Livonia Knights. They have only ever played travel hockey because high school hockey has never been an option for them.

It kind of surprises me, but at the same time it doesnt. There is the room to go there, but it just needs to be introduced, said Bruso.

Taking it one step further, throughout the entire state of Michigan, there is not one single NCAA Division I womens hockey program. Not at Michigan or Michigan State, not at Northern Michigan or Michigan Tech. Charlie Keider is a hockey fan, father, and coach. His daughter plays hockey and he would love to see more opportunities for her.

It is surprising, especially with the amount of universities with mens programs, said Keider. He added that he thinks girls growing up in Michigan are at a disadvantage because they dont have the same type of high school and college opportunities as other states. Absolutely. There are few girls playing out there tonight who couldnt play in their home state or in front of their home state fans.

But that is where the PWHL fills a void for young hockey players and fans in Michigan. Senior Vice President of PWHL Hockey Operations Jayne Hefford says one of the missions of the PWHL is to inspire young girls to get more involved in the sport, both on and off the ice.

You cant be it if you cant see it. For us, its about exposing these players and creating visibility for them.

It is a visibility that hasnt always been there. Keller recalls if she wanted to watch womens hockey, she had to wait to turn on the TV every four years during Olympic coverage. When she was growing up in metro Detroit, she idolized Nicklas Lidstrom, simply because she didnt have any women players to watch.

Hopefully there were a lot of young girls in the crowd tonight and now have a dream and something to look up to and look forward to when theyre our age.

The biggest stars of womens hockey playing in front of the future stars of the game. Members of the Jets said it is amazing to be able to see girls out there on the ice, one even saying how much she looks up to them and hopes that one day I hope Ill be on that ice.

The buzz that the PWHL provided Detroit with was palpable. The atmosphere at Little Caesars Arena for the game was special. Hefford knows that and says it surpassed the PWHLs expectations.

Detroit is a market that we have looked at very closely for a while. I cannot imagine this will be the last time were here, said Hefford.
