(WXYZ) -- New Orleans Saints assistant head coach/tight ends coach Dan Campbell is emerging as the favorite in the Detroit Lions head coaching search, according to a report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.

Campbell has been with the Saints since 2016. Previously he spent 2011-15 with the Miami Dolphins as tight ends coach, serving as interim head coach following Joe Philbin's firing in 2015.

Campbell spent the final three years of his playing career with the Lions, following stints with the Cowboys and Giants.

Under NFL rules, no in-person interview can be conducted with Campbell until New Orleans' season has ended. The Saints host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday in the NFC Divisional round.

Detroit was scheduled to interview Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Todd Bowles on Friday, but the sides mutually agreed to cancel once it became clear Bowles would not receive a job offer, according to a report from NFL Network's Mike Garofolo.
