(WXYZ) -- San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle and Michigan native Joe Staley announced his retirement Saturday.

The 35-year-old Staley, a Rockford, Michigan native, went to Central Michigan. He's played for San Francisco since being drafted 28th overall in 2007.

ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported during Saturday's NFL Draft coverage that Staley would retire due to health concerns.

He was a 6-time Pro Bowler, most recently in 2017, and played in 181 games during his career.

Staley is one of only two Central Michigan players to be drafted in the first round – the other being Eric Fisher, who went first overall to Kansas City in 2013.
