(WXYZ) — The Head for the Cure Foundation has raised more than $13 million for brain cancer research since '03 when the first 5K was organized in suburban Kansas City. In 2018, $2.2 million was raised at events nationwide.
For the last 12 years, the Brain Tumor Trials Collaborative (BTTC) has been the primary beneficiary of the Head for the Cure Foundation (more than $5M since '06). The BTTC is a network of 32 medical centers (led by National Institutes of Health in Washington, D.C.) with the expertise and the desire to participate in state-of-the-art clinical trials investigating new treatments for malignant brain tumors. The local beneficiary is the Henry Ford Hermelin Brain Tumor Center.
More than 700,000 people in the U.S are living with the diagnosis of a primary brain (malignant or non-malignant) or central nervous system tumor. The National Brain Tumor Society estimates 79,000 men, women and children in the U.S. are diagnosed each year with a brain tumor.
