Lots of great musicians will be "rocking the house" at the 27th Annual Detroit Music Awards. The event takes place May 4th at the Filmore in Detroit.  The doors open at 6pm for anyone 18 and older.

Here's what organizers say about the event:

"Rock veterans Sponge®, soul legend Melvin Davis and  Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Allee Willis will be among the special honorees.

The ceremony will feature performances by the five original members of  Sponge® -- celebrating their gold-certified debut album "Rotting Pinata" and playing together for the first time since 1994 -- Davis, rapper Kash Doll, folk-rockers Frontier Ruckus, the electro-soul troupe Liquid Monk, an Assemble Sound Residency with SYBLYNG & Guests, and the soul-flavored pop of Virginia Violet & the Rays. The show will also feature a special appearance by 80s hip-hop hit-makers Maroon.

The Detroit Music Awards Foundation will also be presenting acclaimed DSO conductor and music director Leonard Slatkin with a Distinguished Achievement Award on April 7th at Orchestra Hall.

Since 1992, The Detroit Music Awards Foundation (DMAF) has supported and recognized Detroit's musical community across a variety of genres and styles. In keeping with their long-standing tradition of celebrating all genres of Detroit music, the DMAs will present over 70 awards across eleven musical categories ranging from rock to rap, country to classical, Americana to electronic.

The DMAs are similar to the Grammy Awards. Award winners are determined by local musicians and music industry professionals in southeast Michigan, and presented in eleven music genres; Americana, Blues, Jazz, Gospel/Christian, Country, Classical, Rock, Urban, Electronic/Dance, Rap and World Music. The DMAs are the only local music awards in the nation to be presented by a not-for -profit organization. Voting is accomplished entirely via the Internet.
