Just over a month after revealing their third pregnancy in a music video, Chrissy Teigen and John Legend shared that Teigen suffered a miscarriage after being hospitalized two days earlier.

Known for her transparency and honesty, Teigen posted the heartbreaking update on her social media feeds about her loss.

“We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before,” she wrote on Twitter and Instagram. “We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough.”

The Twitter post included striking black-and-white photo of Teigen praying in a hospital room.

Her Instagram photos also included deeply personal images of Teigen and Legend together, including one picture of the couple holding their child.

A few hours later, Teigen posted a message about the pain every mother who loses a child feels.

Sharing one’s experience with pregnancy loss is one of the hardest things a person can do. To see a high-profile couple share their loss so openly is not only surprising but also meaningful for those who have gone through the same life-changing event, and Teigen’s post resonated with other women who have endured a pregnancy loss or the death of a child.

One Twitter user, @MrsDSalinger, offered her condolences to the couple and shared her own painful experience.

Legend also posted a tribute to his late son, who the couple decided to name Jack.

The couple’s raw grief is familiar to many — miscarriage and pregnancy loss are common occurrences. According to the Mayo Clinic, about 10% to 20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. However, experts believe the number may be even higher because many miscarriages often happen early enough in a pregnancy that a woman might not realize she was pregnant.

In her announcement, Teigen thanked everyone for sending well wishes and the expressed couple’s gratitude for their children Luna and Miles.

While the pain of this loss cast a dark shadow on this family’s life, Teigen believes they will endure.

“On this darkest of days, we will grieve, we will cry our eyes out,” Teigen concluded. “But we will hug and love each other harder and get through it.”
