(WXYZ) — You'll want to hang on to your coat this week, and hopefully you haven't planted your garden just yet.

After reaching 80° on Saturday for the first time in 2020, we may see freezing temperatures return by the end of this week.

A series of cold air masses will plunge south from Canada into Michigan over the next 7 to 10 days. This will keep afternoon temperatures in the 50s, and morning temperatures in the 30s.

The coldest days in the forecast are Friday and Saturday. If temperatures drop below 32° (at DTW) Saturday morning, it would be only the fifth day to drop below freezing in the month of May in Metro Detroit since 1979.

Metro Detroit had only one day drop below freezing in May in the years 2013, 2005, 1986, and 1983.

The record low for May 9th is 29° (1983).

Some suburbs will be close to freezing by Thursday morning, so be prepared to cover plants or bring them inside.
