If you have $500 to spend on a new hair gadget, you might want to consider the new Dyson Corrale hair straightener, which launched on March 10 and is causing quite a stir in the beauty world.

If — like a lot of people — you don’t have that kind of disposable cash, you might want to know what’s so incredible about this hair tool to justify such a hefty price tag. For starters, Dyson’s take on the traditional flat iron has manganese copper alloy plates instead of the usual ceramic ones used in other, more affordable models. Apparently, manganese copper alloy offers greater durability and heat conduction. And that’s not all: the plates actually move.

Basically, they adjust to mold around the hair whenever it passes through the iron, letting the user apply even tension during the styling process. According to Dyson, a company best known for its unique take on the vacuum, this makes it a more efficient tool, which results in 50% less damage to the hair.

The Corrale is currently available in two colorways: black nickel/fuchsia and purple/black.

Following in the footsteps of the now-iconic Dyson Supersonic hair dryer and the Airwrap styler, the Corrale has three heat settings, ranging from 330 to 410 degrees Fahrenheit. During a press demo, stylist Jon Reyman was able to style thick, wavy hair at the lowest setting and quickly create textured curls at the mid-level heat setting.

In short: sleek styles, with minimal damage.

Dyson’s latest release can also work without a cord, meaning no annoying cables getting in the way while you’re styling. When it’s plugged into an outlet or its dock, it takes 70 minutes to completely recharge. The $500 price tag also includes a heat-resistant travel pouch, power cable and the charging dock, which honestly makes the device look like a little piece of art on your bathroom countertop.

Is the Corrale worth $499? Possibly, if you love it so much you see it as a lifelong investment — or can’t live without a flat iron but value the condition of your hair more.

The reviews on Dyson’s website suggest that the dream of no more bad hair days could be a reality with this styling tool. It had 40 customer reviews as of press time, resulting in an average grade of 4.7 out of five stars, but it’s still pretty early in the product’s lifespan.

One reviewer described it as a “truly exceptional product,” writing, “I am a biracial woman (African American & Northern European descent), with fine, dense curly hair. To straighten my hair I prepared using the Airwrap with the Firm Smoothing Brush to get it dry and fairly straight, and then finished with the straightener. Each strand only needed one pass AND no burnt hair smell or tugging on strands! I’m so happy to throw away my old straightener and have this one in my lineup!”

Another user wrote, “Probably the easiest hair styling tool I have ever used. My hair is smooth and silky in less than an hour. Love that it does not pull the hair and that it heats up really quickly. I normally don’t use straighteners because normal ones require more passes in order to make my curly hair straight. This is a game changer!”
