Twenty-seven-year old Gary Chang has been charged with second degree child abuse, up to 10 years in prison, after an accidental shooting killed his 4-year old son, identified by family as Braylon.

Family members also says this boy has a twin brother Nathan and is the youngest of 6 kids.

The shooting happened at 8:40 Friday morning in the basement of a home on Dort. Police say an 8-year old boy found a .22 caliber handgun in the pocket of a pool table in the basement, gave it to his father, Gary who then tossed it onto a bed and left the room.

Police say a child picked up the gun and it went off with one shot hitting the 4-year old in the arm and chest killing him.

Gary Chang spoke to the Judge in Roseville District Court when asked if he should be released on bond. Chang said his son passed away and he needed to be available for funeral arrangements.

He also said, “it’s not like I don’t have a conscience, this is an accident.”

The Judge set bond at $150,000 full cash and will appoint an attorney. Chang says he came here from Wisconsin a few months ago, he is unemployed and was living with family. He told police he brought the gun with him.

If he posts bond, the Judge ordered he can’t leave Michigan, must wear a GPS tether and can’t have access to guns.

He is due back in court on December 26.
