(WXYZ) — A Muslim man was allegedly kicked off of a Greyhound bus for speaking on his phone in Arabic, according to a discrimination complaint filed with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights by the Michigan chapter of Council on American-Islamic Relations.

CAIR states that Abrahaim Mohamed was traveling from Michigan to Ohio by Greyhound bus. After the first stop, Mohamed was allegedly not permitted to continue on to his final destination because the bus driver said she did not like the way he was speaking on his phone. Mohamed told CAIR that several other passengers were also speaking on their phones, but were allowed to continue on their trip, and the only difference was that he was speaking in Arabic.

"Companies like Greyhound that provide a service open to the public have a duty to ensure that all of their customers are safe from racism and anti-Muslim bigotry at the hands of their employees," said CAIR-MI Staff Attorney Amy Doukoure. "American Muslims should feel free to go about their day-to-day lives without having to worry that they will be discriminated against simply for speaking to their loved ones in a language other than English."

Greyhound said it is aware of the complaint but is unable to provide a comment due to the "sensitivity of the issue."
