Kelly Martin has been enjoying caramel treats since she was a little girl helping grandma in her kitchen. "Everybody's got a grandma that's got a special recipe, we're not different," she says. But now Kelly has taken grandma's secret family recipe and turned it into a thriving candy business called Kelly's Karamels.

Turning a family tradition into a business

Kelly worked in health care for years, making her caramel treats in her spare time and sharing them with friends and family at the holiday's. She didn't picture leaving her busy job until a friend  told her he was tired of her giving away her caramels for free at Christmas time and that's when she started envisioning her future in making caramels for a living.

Kelly sold her first caramel by July 2009 and since then, she says they have sold over a million.

Besides serving caramels as sweet treats and party favors at weddings, graduations, and family parties, local retail stores like Busch's, Plum Market, Vince and Joe's, and Holiday Market carry the product as well.

Kelly's Karamels come in 6 different varieties: traditional vanilla, pecan, cherry, (made with Michigan cherries from Traverse City,) coffee, cocoa, and sea salt, the top seller. You can purchase the caramel in different sized boxes ranging from $4-20.
