A man is in police custody after assaulting a 50-year-old DDOT bus driver on Saturday.

Around 10:23 p.m., passenger Eric Dashawn Johnson, 23, boarded the Woodward bus and was attempting to pay the fare, but the driver explained to him the fare card he was attempting to use had insufficient funds.

When the passenger was informed, DDOT officials say, he became disgruntled and began to argue with the driver.

In an effort to continue service and accommodate the passenger, the driver told the passenger to take a seat. Officials say the passenger continued to yell and act disorderly.

When the driver pulled over to the next stop, officials say the passenger attacked the driver, punched him in the face, grabbed him from his seat, pulled him to the bus floor and then kicked him. He then fled the bus and was found five blocks away from the incident with the help of DPD, Transit Police and customers.

The driver was taken to Henry Ford Hospital and suffered minor injuries.

Johnson has been charged with assault and battery.
