A Detroit gun rights advocacy group announced Tuesday that it will offer free firearm shooting lessons to 800 women in southeast Michigan.

The name of the group is Legally Armed In Detroit, and the goal is to help women interested in learning more about firearms and personal protection, the group says.

According to a release, the free shooting lesson was the brainchild of Rick Ector, an National Rifle Association (NRA) Approved Firearms Trainer. The idea came after he saw a local television newscast about a young woman whose body was found on the east side of Detroit seven years ago.

The event will be held on Sunday, May 20 at the Top Gun Shooting Sports Gun Range, 22050 Pennsylvania in Taylor.

Free advance pre-registration is required for participation, and no previous firearms training or experience is required.

This is the 7th Annual Free Target Shooting Event for Women in southeast Michigan.
