With school wrapping up throughout metro Detroit many parents will soon be looking for activities to send their children to during the summer.
Traditional camps are an options, but here’s a few “outside the box” locations that offer up fun activities, or even week-long camps, that you may not think of.
HENRY FORD MUSEUM
The Henry Ford Museum has hosted summer camps for more than a decade, and nowadays many of the counselors who are coming back are former students!
“We say that we trick them into learning because they’re so engaged,” said Debra Wake, with Henry Ford Museum.
Wake said they still teach using Henry Ford’s belief of learning by doing in mind — children even get the chance to go to parts of the museum and explore things that regular visitors don’t get the chance to do.

DETROIT ZOO
While a day at the zoo is a fun day for the family any day of the week, did you know that the Detroit Zoo also runs Zookeeper camps and Eco camps?
The week-long courses vary based on age, but include visits with animals, hikes, crafts and education from the caretakers of various animals. Some classes are already filled up, and others are filling up quickly.

ANN ARBOR HANDS-ON MUSEUM
While not a traditional camp per se, the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum does offer a variety of one-hour workshops throughout the summer for children.
The Little Scientists Club has varying times, so you’ll want to make sure you check the schedule to find a time to attend.
They don’t offer summer camps like some of the other entities listing, but do offer a summer camp in conjunction with the Leslie Science & Nature Center and the Yankee Air Museum through the Unity in Learning CampPrograms.
MICHIGAN SCIENCE CENTER
Another option for parents looking to keep their kids active is the summer science camp at the Michigan Science Center.
Summer camp registration is open now online.
Classes begin with pre-schoolers and go all the way up to 8th graders. If you’re strapped for cash they also offer a virtual summer science camp too.
