The Amazon fulfillment center in Livonia is up and running.

The building opened in September but the company gave Governor Rick Snyder and the media a tour Friday morning.

Although the company decided to pass on Detroit for their second headquarters, Amazon has a corporate office in Detroit, a sorting center in Brownstown and the fulfillment center in Livonia, with two more on the way in Romulus and Shelby Township.

“Really a function of everyone working together to create an environment to have wonderful companies like Amazon come to our state," Snyder said.

Snyder took a tour of the facility for the first time and was impressed by what he said is “the efficiency and how well they are treating their people.”

The building is one million square feet, equivalent to 28 football fields.

They employ 1,000 full time workers. That number will more than triple by the end of the year.

Small business owners in Michigan, who normally sell their products locally, can now sell on Amazon.com with the items coming through the building.

Snyder said the jobs created by centers like the one in Livonia is a great boost to the economy.

“I had a chance to to talk to a couple of folks and they are enjoying what they’re doing. They think it’s a great place to work, which is good. That’s the goal here, good jobs for Michiganders.”
