Your immune system is a complex interconnected network spread throughout your entire body. 

It’s absolutely essential for survival, and we rely on it to stay healthy.  When you pick up germs, your immune system steps in and fights them off. 

But what happens if your immune system fails? 

That can happen if a germ or other invaders are successful and make you sick. If the failure is severe, you can take a lot longer to get back to feeling normal, and you might see complications from the infection or illness. 

Some groups of people are actually immunocompromised. That means their immune system has completely failed, leaving them vulnerable to opportunistic infections. 

So they can get sick from ordinary things that most of us normally wouldn’t be affected by. 

Some immune systems can actually work too hard. And what happens, your body can’t tell the difference between healthy cells and germs. 

So your system turns against you and attacks your own body. 

This can cause health conditions like allergies, eczema and asthma. An overactive immune system can also lead to autoimmune disorders like Lupus, Celiac Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Multiple Sclerosis. 

So what causes you to have immune system failure? 

Well, we don’t have the exact answer yet.

But I can tell you that your immune system is tied to your central nervous system. And when you’re stressed out, cortisol levels will rise. And if you’re stressed a lot, then high cortisol levels can negatively affect your body, interfering with digestion, metabolism, even breaking down healthy bone and muscle tissue. 

And that can really slow down your body’s healing process.  So it’s important to treat your body well.  And I’ve got my prescriptions to help you with this:

  1. A healthy diet is key as your immune system needs regular nourishment. You can take a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement, but it’s best to eat wholesome nutrient dense foods.
  2. Stay active and get regular exercise. Also keep your weight healthy.
  3. Be sure to get enough sleep. Aim for 7-9 hours every night.
  4. Manage your stress. Exercise will help and so will meditation, yoga, and deep breathing - even listening to music can be soothing.

These prescriptions will help support and nourish your entire body.  And as a result of you leading a healthy lifestyle, your immune system will thank you, and stay strong and healthy.
