We haven't had a completely dry Opening Day since 2014! And, tomorrow looks to be no exception!
March is known for its ups and downs weather-wise and a rather active weather pattern has developed this week.
Unfortunately, the Opening Day forecast doesn't look as great as it did several days ago. The combination of a slow moving cold front and moisture from the south will trigger periods of rain on Thursday.
Rain showers will move northeast across southeast Lower Michigan during the mid-to-late morning and continue into the afternoon hours. Current forecast models show Metro Detroit, including Comerica Park, with the chance for rain showers for tailgating and during the baseball game.
The exact placement of any moderate rain isn't consistent across the forecast models, but the general trend is for periods of more moderate rain to possibly move across the area during game time.
At least it's rain and not snow! A trace or more of snow has been recorded at 23 of the 117 Tigers Home Openers. Just since 2000, six games have been played with snow in the forecast. Last year, was a windy and cool Opening Day with a trace of snow and .01" of rain during the day. If we count tomorrow, there have only been four March Home Openers. However, this year's game is the earliest ever played (the other three were on March 31st).
It won't be the coldest Opening Day, but it certainly won't be as warm as many fans would like for baseball. Temperatures will struggle to climb out of the 40s, so make sure you have sufficient layers to stay warm on under your rain gear.
