"I'm angry. I'm angry because, once again, I have to talk about a child being shot by a coward," said Detroit Police Chief James Craig after a seven-year-old was shot late Thursday night on the city's east side.

The boy was shot in his home on Chelsea near Gunston, but the shooter was trying to aim at a house on Wilshire, according to Detroit Police.

The shooter fired 13 rounds from a high-powered rifle at the house on Wilshire. Two bullets struck the house on Wilshire. One bullet hit a truck that was parked in the driveway. But one bullet hit and penetrated a home on the next street over where the little boy lived with his family.

The child's mother told police that she heard the gunshots and moments later her son came downstairs and said he'd been shot in the neck.

At first, a man living in the house police say was targeted told 7 Action News that he and his wife don't have any problems with anyone that would make them a target.

But he later said that there was a period in which he and his wife were separated that she became involved with a young man, and that young man has been causing trouble. The husband said it was earlier in the day on Thursday that the man was driving up and down their street and arguing with his wife on the phone.

Detroit Police have not identified the person they have arrested and are now holding as a person of interest.

Police say the high-powered rifle that was used in the shooting has not been recovered.
