SAGINAW, Mich. (WXYZ) — A 48-year-old man is dead and a canine officer is recovering from stab wounds after a hostage situation in Saginaw Sunday morning.

This happened Sunday morning in the 600 block of Sheridan, according to Saginaw police. Officers responded to reports of a domestic issue between neighbors. The suspect, who was armed with a knife, held one person hostage.

Officers entered the home with 5-year-old German Shepherd canine officer Deebo, who was then stabbed in the head by the suspect. The suspect was then shot and killed by police.

"Officers eventually rescued the hostage from the home," said Saginaw Police Chief Bob Ruth.

Canine officer Deebo was taken to a veterinary hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery and return to work.

"I think he's going to be okay, but you never know in these situations until everything comes out," Ruth said. "I'm hoping for the best."

The Michigan State Police has taken over the investigation. The officers involved in this shooting are now on administrative leave until the investigation is complete.
