One man is dead, another is recovering after becoming tangled in underwater weeds in a Shelby Township creek on Saturday.

According to the Macomb County Sheriff's Office, two men were swimming in Stony Creek Metro Park on Saturday, June 30 at 8 p.m. when the incident occurred.

The two men, both 20 years old, were swimming without life jackets when they were caught in heavy underwater vegetation, police say.

One of the men were able to make it to shore safely with the assistance of a nearby boater. A second man, Rayven Elia, of Sterling Heights, was located by search and rescue personnel. Police say Elia may have been under water for at least 15 minutes.

Elia was given CPR when he was pulled to shore. He was then transported to a local hospital where he died on Sunday, July 1.

The drowning is still under investigation, deputies say.
