Police and the public are hoping for a different weekend downtown after the last was spoiled by violence.

So far, it’s a beautiful, busy night as you may expect. With the Tigers’ game and the grand prix this weekend, but we’ve also seen a lot of police and that’s by design.

Proactive policing is what Detroit police say they’ll be doing this weekend downtown.

“A lot of activity, Grand Prix, we do anticipate a lot of crowds to come downtown so yes we will have additional manpower to manage those crowds,” says Deputy Chief Elvin Barren.

The presence is also to ease minds.

Last weekend there were multiple shootings - 2 of them in Greektown, and police tell us the plan isn’t different and they want people coming here to know that DPD’s response to those shootings was seconds.

“The violence that occurred over the weekend was not random, it was specific and targeted to known associates,” says Barren.

And big brother is watching. We’ve also watched a plethora of police and security, leaving Greektown goers feeling secure.
