A suspected drunk driver from Novi allegedly crashed his car and left his two kids on the side of the road while he ran away.

Police say 32-year-old Chad Hewitt blew twice the legal limit once he was caught over the holiday weekend.

Branch County Sheriff deputies say a family member picked the kids up on the side of the road and took off while police were still searching for Hewitt.

We saw some of the family and tried to get an explanation.

What police say happened is the 32-year-old called his family to have them pick up his kids, including a 2 and 4-year-olds, from the side of the road after losing control and driving 20 feet down a ditch, hitting trees on Saturday.

“The driver hid from being noticed, I guess, but left his kids on the side of the road,” says Branch County Undersheriff Keith Eichler. “Being intoxicated to the point of - I just have no words for that.”

A driver saw the abandoned kids after the Branch County crash and called 911.

Police found Hewitt in nearby Coldwater, where they say he was super drunk - blowing more than twice the legal limit.

Hewitt’s Novi neighbors say the whole situation is unthinkable.

The children are okay despite not having their seatbelts on.

Hewitt is charged with his third dui offense along with child endangerment.
