Waterford renters 'living in trash' say management company ignore problem

Posted

David Smith said it’s the same old song and dance week in, week out.

He and other renters told 7 Action News they've been facing an unsanitary build-up of trash, taking over the dumpster at Waterford Square apartment complex.

Smith is just the latest renter to complain to 7 Action News about the problem, which they said began in February with a broken compactor.

Tenants have sent 7 Action News stunning images showing just how bad the problem has been.

"We’re literally living in trash," said another tenant, Courtney Mayo.

Mayo said looking at the trash, some of it falling out of bags, literally made her sick to her stomach -- worried about how it may attract rodents.

But despite complaining on several occasions, RESSCO, the management company, tenants said the company had failed to make a permanent repair.

When 7 Action News reached out to RESSCO, the company initially said the compactor had been fixed, that they regularly remove any excess trash and that “any photos that show otherwise are not accurate.”

But newly taken photos tell a different story.

Renters gave 7 Action News time stamped photos showing the build up again this past weekend, suggesting either the compactor is not working or that maintenance isn't tending to the issue.

7 Action News got back on the case pressing RESSCO for answers.

Their response this time around was in part that tenants can fix the situation by pushing the compactor button themselves.

7 Action News scanned one tenant's lease. Nowhere in it, does it say tenants are responsible. The township also says it's not typically an expectation of tenants to compact the trash themselves.

RESSCO also claimed, for a second time, that renters were fabricating the problem, writing in a statement to 7 Action News that:

There is a small faction of residents purposefully causing trash issues in order to contact the media with the intent of receiving rent credits. Despite this, we continue to work after hours and weekends to keep the area clean.

7 Action News has reported the complaints to the township. Because of that reporting, the township has pledged to take the photos and the allegations seriously.

They said they planned to return to the property and were prepared to issue violations, as needed.
