The city of Royal Oak is increasing its parking rates for surface lots and some garages, depending on the time of day people park.
The plan was approved by the Royal Oak City Commission after the recommendation from the Royal Oak Downtown Development Authority.
For on-street parking, rates will go from $1 to $1.25 before 5 p.m. and will now go to $1.50 per hour after 5 p.m. in high-demand areas. Meters outside of those areas will stay at 75 cents.
As for surface lots, those will go up to 75 cents per hour before 5 p.m. to $1 per hour after 5 p.m. Even those outside of the high-demand areas will increase to 50 cents before 5 p.m. and 75 cents after 5 p.m.
Garage prices will still be free for the first two hours and then go to 75 cents per hour after that. There is a flat rate of either $3 or $5 after 5 p.m. depending on which structure you use.
It isn't clear when the parking increases will go into effect.
