ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WXYZ) — Ahead of students returning to college campuses across Michigan next week, the University of Michigan has announced its plans for the 2021 Winter semester.

Under the plan, the university will require mandatory weekly COVID-19 testing for undergraduates who are living and working on campus.

“We have engaged broadly across the campus to gather input from faculty, staff and students,” President Mark Schlissel wrote in a letter to the university. “Our plan for the winter term reflects the best of what we learned and what we’ve heard that you hope to achieve going forward.”

In the plan, undergrad students who do not need to live on campus should remain at their permanent residences for the semester, and more classes will still be offered remotely, with fewer hybrid classes.

There will also be stricter enforcement of public health policies and stricter penalties for violations.

Social gatherings of three or more will result in automatic probation, and those who are in quarantine or isolated housing and violate the public health policy will have their University Housing contract terminated.

Students off-campus who engage in the same behaviors will be referred to the Office of Student Conflict Resolution or the Washtenaw County Health Department.
