DETROIT (WXYZ) — Antoine Davis has recently named the Freshman of the Week, for the nation.

He's already won the Horizon League's honor five times, but it shouldn't come as much of a surprise.

Davis is second in the country in points per game, for any player, at 27.3 PPG.

Davis has been making fools of all the players who’ve tried to check him, he’s been unstoppable. In a game last week against Wright State, he scored 48.

Only two other freshman since 1996 have done anything like that.

What makes it even more unique, is that he’s doing it for his dad, Mike, who is the head coach at Detroit Mercy.

“We’re the only one in Division I that has a father as coach and a son that’s playing on the same team and so I’m thankful to Detroit Mercy for giving ya this opportunity,” Titans head coach Mike Davis said.

This budding superstar didn’t just show up overnight, the hard work, the dedication behind the scenes, the five years in the making to get Antoine playing at the level he is today, and when you hear the number of shots he’s put up in his lifetime?

You might not believe it.

“We may be at almost a million shots, of just work, that may be hard to believe but an off day for him is 500 to 1,000 shots,” Mike said.

“A lot of work and preparation, I’ve been working on this for five years now and so I kind of saw it coming but not like this,” Antoine added.

“I said do you want to be famous or really, really good? Because if you want to be really, really good than you’ll put the work in that it takes to be a really good basketball player,” Mike said.

The Titans host three straight home games before heading back on the road at Horizon League play continues.
