University of Georgia running back Todd Gurley has been suspended indefinitely, the university announced Thursday.

The suspension is taking place while an ongoing investigation into an alleged NCAA rule violation.

"I'm obviously very disappointed," said Georgia football coach Mark Richt in a statement. "The important thing for our team is to turn all our attention toward preparation for Missouri."

Gurley, a Heisman Trophy candidate, had an impressive start to the 2014 season. He rushed for 786 yards and eight touchdowns on 94 carries in five games for the Bulldogs.

Georgia (4-1, 2-1 SEC) is ranked No. 13 in the AP Top 25 Poll.

ESPN reported the NCAA investigation is based on whether Gurley was paid for autographs, memorabilia or the use of his likeness.

Gurley, a junior, is considered a top prospect for the 2015 NFL draft.
