(WXYZ) — The 149th Open Championship has been canceled, the first time it won't happen since 1945, according to multiple reports.

The tournament – scheduled for July 16-19 at Royal St. George's in Sandwich, England, will be played in 2021 at the same location.

"I can assure everyone that we explored every option for playing The Open this year but it is not going to be possible," R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers said.

The 150th Open, at the Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland, will be moved to 2022.

The Masters, which was scheduled for this week, has been canceled and is likely to take place in the fall, and an announcement on the future of the PGA Tour schedule, U.S. Open, PGA Championship and Ryder Cup is expected later Monday.
