Zimmerman headed to 45-day injured list

WXYZ — Jordan Zimmerman will forever be remembered as the last big free agent signing before former Tigers owner Mike Illitch passed away.

Signing a five-year, $110 million dollar deal, Zimmerman knew he was trying to live up to high expectations.

His career in Detroit took another turn for the worse, as he was placed on the 45-day injured list, making it questionable if he will ever throw another pitch for the Tigers.

“He understands everything that we’re doing here,” Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said.

“We’ve had conversations with him. It’s not exactly the way he would like it, but he understands the problems we’re having with the short season and trying to put together this roster.”

The goal is to have Zimmerman return at some point in the season to bolster the rotation down the stretch, but his is the same injury that has lingered from a season ago.
