A five-year-old girl is in critical condition, undergoing surgery after being mauled by multiple mixed breed dogs.

It happened at a home in the 6200 block of Holcomb. That's near Harper and Gratiot on the city's east side.

We're told the girl suffered injuries to her intestines and back.

Police say she was playing with the dogs while visiting a family friend, then went outside with them. That's where the mauling occurred.

Officers say the home shares a backyard with another home where dogs also live. It is believed there may have been 10 dogs in all, with 6 being at the home the girl was visiting with her father. Police say the city has a limit of four dogs per house.

The girl's father attempted to drive her to the hospital, but got into an accident and hit a curb. They were then helped by a stranger, who saw they were in trouble and drove them the rest of the way to the hospital.

Police are still trying to sort out how many of the dogs attacked her. They are waiting on a warrant to seize the dogs.

The owner of the six dogs has been arrested on outstanding warrants - including failure to give up a dog that has bit someone.

The investigation is ongoing.
