Detroit police say an officer shot and killed a suspect on the city's west side Monday afternoon.

We're told officers observed a green Pontiac going at a high rate of speed with one person inside the car.

Police tried to stop it, it crashed and then the person inside took off on foot.

One officer chased him 1/4 mile to an abandoned house near Otsego and Webb and into overgrown backyard. They got into a scuffle as he was trying to arrest the suspect. The officer pulled out his gun, fired a shot, killing the suspect.

The officer involved in the shooting has been with the department for 22 years, 7 Action News has learned.
