Federal authorities are on a multi-state hunt after more than 500 pounds of explosives were stolen from a CSX Train that stopped in Detroit, according to CBS News.

The train was traveling from Chicago, through Ohio and into Detroit.

7 Action News has spoken with the ATF. They say the theft was discovered Wednesday and 32 cases are missing. One full case was discovered on the train.

Officials say the fireworks are the commercial grade and of the type typically used for aerial shows. They are not for use by consumers.

When the train car arrived in Detroit, half of the shipment was gone, according to CBS News, and investigators believe the explosives were stolen along the way.

An ATF spokesperson told CBS News it is a very serious case. CBS News said the explosives are technically classified as fireworks, but "because they are commercial grade combined with the quantity makes them extremely dangerous."

ATF, Detroit police and CSX police are all working on the case. However, ATF is the lead agency. They are trying to determine where the theft occurred.

CSX has issued the following statement on the incident:

CSX is cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms in investigating the apparent theft of a quantity of commercial fireworks from a CSX freight train on Wednesday, April 20, 2016. CSX reported the theft as soon as it was discovered, upon the train's arrival in Detroit. The train originated in Chicago.

ATF has asked anyone who may have information about these stolen fireworks to call 313-202-3400. Safety is CSX's highest priority, and CSX is committed to continuing to work with ATF in its investigation of this incident.

Officials are checking each stop along the route, trying to determine how long the stops were.

Federal officials are deeply concerned about any injuries these fireworks may cause.
