Just born: New baby giraffe at Detroit Zoo is 5 feet tall and super cute

The Detroit Zoo announced the arrival of a new female giraffe calf born on Saturday. It is the second giraffe calf to be born at the zoo in as many years.

According to the zoo, the giraffe was born at 8:21 p.m. on Saturday to 7-year-old Kivuli following a 14-month gestation. Her father is 8-year-old Jabari, and its the pair's second calf. 1-year-old Mpenzi was born on Sept. 30, 2014.

The calf, who is has not yet been named, was born outdoors and took her first steps within a half hour of her birth. She weighs 166 pounds and is more than 5 feet tall.

"This is a wonderful new addition to the Detroit Zoo," Detroit Zoo chief Life Sciences Officer Scott Carter said in a release. "The calf is doing great - she has been spending time with mom and is curious about big brother Mpenzi."
