There was a special thank you for first responders in Dearborn Heights Tuesday.

Elementary, middle, and high school students in the city presented police and firefighters with homemade cards.

It happened in front of a city council meeting.

It has been a tough few weeks for them. Last month, they responded to an horrific tragedy.

Forty-nine-year-old Gregory Green killed his two young children and his two teenage stepchildren. He shot and stabbed their mother and left her for dead.

For those who experienced the aftermath, cards and thank yous couldn't come at a better time.

"Went through a lot on this tragic event. And all along we've had the support from the community,” says Chief Lee Gavin. “We've received a lot of emails, a lot of calls, a lot of gestures, good gestures such as food brought to the police station. This kind of caps it off."

Many police and firefighters went through counseling to deal with what they saw in the green home.
